Food & Drink in Bali

Bali is blessed with an array of international food second to none. The 2 places in Bali that stand out for quality and choice are Seminyak and Ubud, featuring internationally known restaurants such as KuDeTa and Mozaic.

Balinese cuisine itself has some surprisingly good dishes and food items such as sate babibabi guling and lawar. Balinese food isn't as easy to find as you might expect with the best being reserved for wedding ceremonies. Definitely stop outside a temple ceremony for some sate babi (pork satay). You'll usually get 10 sticks for around 7,000rp.

Indonesian food or what you'll find in most warungs is mostly a selection of Javanese food. You'll notice the sweet flavours as opposed to overpowering hotnessChili is used in Indonesian / Javanese food but nowhere like the amount in Balinese or Sumatran food. In these types of warungs you see plates with a selection of food items on behind a glass case. Simply ask for what kind of rice you want (red, yellow of white) then point to whatever items take your fancy.

Padang food places are similar and specialize in Sumatran food, which is simpler and spicier.

The main tourist centers such as KutaSeminyakUbud, Nusa DuaSanur etc. have a decent selection of western style restaurants. Outside the tourist areas eating options can be very limited, with a local warung serving nasi campur or nasi goreng your best option.

The most popular local beer is Bintang which means 'star'. Arak is the strong palm liquor often used as a mixer.
